This story first appeared in 2018 in the Spiderforest Webcomic Collective anthology Threads: A Gallery of Rogues, which is available in print for the impatient among you by clicking on the image below. It appeared alongside fifteen other graphic short stories in full color, and so for my money it’s a good buy for entertainment during the current time! Are the emoting eyepieces an optional add-on?
Perhaps they are differing models? As in the P5 series is an older wartime or pre-wartime model maybe.
I was thinking they might be for helping humans understand the moods of a centran in a relatable way. Something P5 would have nothing but contempt for, but would assist in a detective working closely with humans.
You might very well think that, but of course I couldn’t possibly comment. 😉
Fair enough, I can only hope my questions will be answered as the story proceeds. And if not, I must continue to wonder!

I don’t think you can lynch something that does not breathe, but I get what you mean. They’re probably in some sort of negotiated stalemate.
There’s an armistice. Humans are dependent upon Central technology now that they have irreparably damaged the ecology of the planet for the foreseeable future, and the Centrans are stuck on Earth since the Humans destroyed their starship. There are other reasons too but that’s not important really.
That explains why the governments aren’t murdering them. It doesn’t explain why the *people* aren’t.

P5 is nothing if not arrogant. He’d fit right into modern culture.
He really would…plus he reminds me of the personalities of several people I know which is a but unnerving.
“U.S. Provisional Government” on the arm patch last page? A constellation of only 36 stars in the flag on this page? Looks as though either Earth-bound politics took quite a power shift relative to our world, be that as consequence of the War or due to unrelated earlier divergence.
Mr. Pays Attention, there! Yes, 36 states in the U.S. Provisional Government. Those are the states which have managed to be “reorganized” after the War.
